Sphola Consulting’s expertise spans many areas including facilitation of various Construction Training courses and Enterprise Development services. Sphola Consulting has extensive knowledge and experience in the field of Contractor Development. Outlined below are some of the highlights of the work that Sphola Consulting has performed for clients.

National Department of Public Works – Pretoria Developed the 2014 Youth Foundation for the Policy Development Unit and also developed the concept of the National Construction Week. 2004/5
Institute for Public Finance and Auditing Sphola Consulting has been involved in the facilitation and monitoring of the Public Seta Learnership workshop programme. This was a Learnership intervention programme driven by IPFA with the aim of improving and preparing Learnership candidates for Learnership assessments.

Other programmes facilitated for IPFA by Sphola Consulting are Project Management and Communication for the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Implementation of the MSSI PROJECT, assisting with Project Research and Facilitation. In particular Sphola Consulting was responsible for:

  • Analyzing training needs for teachers.
  • Researching, writing reports on cluster leader’s workshops.
  • Conducting teacher training workshops on Mathematics and Natural Sciences materials.
KZN Department of Education Facilitated Financial Management, Language Proficiency, Advanced Computer Training and Office Administration for the KZN Department of Education’s employees in various districts. 2007/8
KZN Department of Public Works – Head Office Formulation of strategies and policies for the implementation of the department’s special projects including National Youth Services (NYS) and the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) within the province.  Our responsibilities included but were not limited to:

  • Stakeholder liaisons.
  • Development of implementation strategies for EPWP programmes.
  • Development of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Drawing up MOUs for EPWP strategic partners.
  • Development of the National Youth Service business plans.
  • Development of the exit strategy for EPWP special projects.
Siyathembana Facilitated various Learnership and skills programmes. 2008 -2010
KZN Department of Public Works – EThekwini Region Aligning the Region’s Operations Department with Batho Pele principles in preparation for the KZN Premier Service Excellence Awards (PSEA). Our responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Stakeholder liaisons.
  • Development of the Service Delivery Implementation Plan.
  • Development of the Service Commitment Charter.
  • Gathering relevant evidence for PSEA.
  • Site visits for Compliance with PSEA.
  • Development of the Courtesy Code.
  • Development of a Revised Code of Conduct for staff.
Kuhle Concrete Products Development of Business systems and Business mentoring. The project was funded by the Department of Minerals and Energy. 2009
W&R Seta Project management services and implementation of the Ikusasa Project. 2010
Lulu Gwagwa Development Consultants Provided project management services for the delivery of the National Youth Service Training project on behalf of the Department of Public Works KZN.

Also participated in the research development of Training Plans for the NSF Funding, managed by the KZN Office of The Premier.

Independent Development Trust



Implementation of the Soccer Clinics Project during the World Cup 2010 South Africa, in the rural areas for IDT as implementing agent for the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The project was successful and was recommended to be extended into a fully – fledged programme called the Rural Soccer Development Programme.

Bhombe Chitey Projects Provided mentoring and training to main and subcontractors on the Bhombe Chitey school building project. Bhombe Chitey Projects were responsible for the project management for the building of 8 new schools in the KZN province.

Our role was to provide business management and technical support to all contractors thus ensuring smooth running of their tasks within the project.

Over and above this we are responsible for capacity building of the contractors which includes Office administration training, Project Management training and SMME Development in line with National Contractor Development Programme of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

SEDA Amajuba Delivered a 5 day training programme delivered for Emerging Contractors for SEDA Amajuba. The programme offered CETA accredited modules which included Financial Management, Project Management, Tender Training, Health and Safety and Construction Management. The intervention was successfully implemented.

  • Pre-SABS ISO 9001 audit and accreditation for Rainbow Birdy.
  • SABS ISO 9001 accreditation for Unlimited Jewellery Manufacturers.
  • HR Management Development Project for Lenyora Distribution.
Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Implemented emerging contractor skills development programme for KZN. Above this training, we have assisted Emerging Contractors on a variety of Construction Business matters including Financial Management, sourcing finance with FNB, drawing up Safety Plans and more.

We also have developed the Framework for eThekwini Training Academy for Emerging Contractor Development. The academy is functional and is adding great value to the development of Emerging Contractors.

Braune Training Facilitated various Learnership programmes. 2010 – 2013
Siqu Consulting Organizational Alignment and development of QMS systems for SABS ISO 9001 accreditation. 2011/12
SEDA Sisonke Delivered a 3 Months training programme for Emerging Contractors for SEDA Sisonke. The programme offered CETA accredited modules which included Civil and Building Construction. The intervention was a success. The final product of the learning was building an RDP house for a destitute family. 2012/13

Ibhongo Consulting Ibhongo Consulting offers Project Management Company and Civil Engineering services for Dept. of Transport.

Sphola Consulting has delivered Contractor Development training for NYS for Ibhongo Consulting projects.

Sphola consulting also delivered successfully an Organizational alignment project for Ibhongo.

National Department of Public Works We are currently delivering a Learnership programme for the NDPW Vuk’uphile Emerging Contractor Development programme. Emerging Contractors from eThekwini Municipality are the beneficiaries of the programme.

The training entails training the beneficiaries on the Supervision of Construction Processes NQF 4, a CETA accredited qualification. This is National initiative to develop Emerging Contractors.

The other stakeholders in the project are Nedbank, whose role is Entrepreneurship and Financial management development of the Emerging Contractors. The programme has been delivered successfully with very positive feedback from ALL stakeholders.

KZN Ezemvelo We have a MoU with regards to delivery of Nature Conservation programmes including Save-the-Rhino through the Ezemvelo Cup and water conservation through the waterless car wash programmes. 2011 till present

The Sisonke Development Agency Delivery of a 5 day training programme delivered for Emerging Contractors from 5 Local Municipalities for The SDA. The CMG 101 programme has modules which include Financial Management, Project Management, Tender Training, Health and Safety and Construction Management. 2014
